This lecture explores the lifeways, material culture, worldviews, and cross-cultural interactions of the Western Slavs during the Viking Age. Covering the ninth to eleventh centuries, this turbulent period saw profound transformations in the broader Western Slavic world, driven by the expansion of cross-cultural trade networks, the emergence of early states, and the spread of Christianity. The lecture delves into these themes in detail, offering an intercultural perspective on the Western Slavic world by drawing comparisons with similar developments in Scandinavia. It also addresses historiographic issues and the socio-political climate of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Central Europe, highlighting how Western Slavic archaeology was used and, at times, misappropriated in ideologically charged narratives about the past.
