This lecture offers basic insights into English linguistics, that is, the synchronic and diachronic study of the English language. We will cover a wide range of topics, among them phonology, writing, syntax, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and matters of text and style. To some extent, the lecture will show an overlap with the facts taught in the seminar Introduction to linguistics, in other respects it will go beyond the basic facts and will give you insights into how linguistic theory can be applied to authentic language.
