What kind of a place is London? And what do literary engagements with London tell us about this metropolis and its cultural significance? – Cities, it has long been claimed, are just like texts which must be read, deciphered and interpreted. How, then, has London been produced throughout the centuries? What views, what hopes, what desires or anxieties have shaped it? And what do London texts more principally tell us about writing and its power to remake the world?
