What kind of a place is London? And what do literary engagements with London tell us about this metropolis and its cultural significance? – Cities, it has long been claimed, are just like texts which must be read, deciphered and interpreted. But sometimes cities are great spectacles which are performed and must be viewed, appreciated and received just a like play. So to engage with London spectacles and London texts offers ways for us to understand how such a city may never have been simply there as a given entity, but has been performed, constructed and remade in cultural practices as a contested place. How, then, has London been produced throughout the centuries? What views, what hopes, what desires or anxieties have shaped it? And what do London texts more principally tell us about writing and its power to remake the world?
