This lecture offers basic insights into English linguistics, that is, the scientific study of the English language. We will examine the sounds of English, its building-blocks for words, and how this language combines words into sentences; we will gain insights into language variation and change and how people communicate. To some extent, the lecture will show an overlap with the facts taught in the 'Proseminar' Introduction to linguistics. In other respects, it will go beyond the basic facts, introducing you not only to linguistic theories but also to the thinkers behind them.
