Vorlesung

Studies the history of the modern Middle East/North Africa focusing mainly on the history of the region from 1500 and the changes that began to take place over this time. The course, meeting once a week, concentrates on several aspects of the region’s transformation: the experience of imperialism and colonialism synonymous with the rise of finance capitalism, modernity, nationalism and the development of the modern state system. As such, this course positions the region in a complex relationship that put its main events in a larger global context. Observing the transformation of the last 600 years through the themes of political economy, competing imperialisms, the rise of capitalism, technology, the modern state, and ideologies drawing from a wide range of readings. Deeper analysis of the modern histories of Yemen, the Persian Gulf, Egypt/Sudan, and Turkey are made through these themes.

Specific to the 20th and 21st centuries, the last third of the course examines closely inter-state conflicts and efforts to negotiate peace in the Middle East after World War II. This will allow for the course to pay special attention to regional rivalries, the policies of the main international powers, political economy of oil/gas, food production/supply chain management and finance, and domestic politics in shaping regional dynamics.
