Inhaltsbeschreibung für das Semester: This lecture offers basic insights into English linguistics, that is, the synchronic and diachronic study of English language. We will cover a wide range of topics: phonology, writing, syntax, historical linguistics, language variation and change, pragmatics, and matters of text and style. To some extent, the lecture will show an overlap with the facts taught in the 'Proseminar' Introduction to Linguistics, in other respects it will go beyond the basic facts and will give you insights into how linguistic theory can be applied to authenic language. Attending this lecture is highly recommended to all students of English though it may not be required by your respective course of studies.
