Inhaltsbeschreibung für das Semester:

The lecture traces the course of English literature from the early sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, a turbulent age of fierce religious controversy and power struggle culminating in regicide. The period had witnessed a growing national self-confidence, the development of the nation state and a national culture, and the onset of colonization. The invention of printing at the end of the 15th century facilitated the circulation of new ideas and contributed to an astonishing literary upsurge.

To introduce students to the rich variety of Early Modern writing, the lecture surveys canonical texts in poetry, drama, and prose by the most eminent authors of the age, including Thomas More, Philip Sidney, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Andrew Marvell and John Milton. Viewing literature as an autonomous cultural practice as well as a social construct, we shall focus on the development of generically specific aesthetic devices and explore literary works within their historical context. Last but not least, the lecture aims to spark enthusiasm for the period's writing and demonstrate how a deeper understanding of how literature works can enhance the pleasure of reading.
No prior knowledge or preparatory work is necessary, but regular weekly reading is required. Most texts to be discussed are available in The Norton Anthology of English Literature.
