Inhaltsbeschreibung für das Semester: The emergence of American English is the result of the colonial migration of speakers of English from different parts of Britain over a protracted period of time. Contact with West African and Native American languages as well as with, e.g., German, Irish, and Spanish has also shaped the different varieties of English spoken in North America today. In this course, we will not only compare standard American English to its parent variety, British English, but also look at different social, ethnic, and geographical varieties of non-standard American English. Because American English has also functioned as a fertile testing ground in various subdisciplines of linguistics, e.g., sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and World Englishes, we will also approach the our topic with a keen eye on linguistic theory and methodology.
